Public Safety Information

Lifts/Ramps

All vehicles are lift- and ramp-equipped and they can accommodate riders using mobility devices. Riders can request to use the lift or ramp.

 

Scooters

Riders using scooters are welcome. Scooters will be secured to the best of our ability during transport.

 

Portable Assistive Devices

Drivers will ensure all mobility aids (canes, walkers, braces, etc.) are safely stowed and secured after the rider is seated and buckled.

 

Devices should be placed where they won’t block aisles or become a hazard during sudden stops. Drivers will return the device to the rider before assisting them off the vehicle.

 

Wheelchairs

Lift platforms are 30" wide and 48" long and can safely hold up to 800 lbs. (rider, chair, and accessories combined). Mobility devices must be secured in the designated area and not block the aisle. Wheelchair riders must be secured with a seat belt to during transport. The driver will assist with securement as trained.

 

Seat Belts

All Jackson County Public Transit drivers and passengers are required to fasten their safety belts before the vehicle moves. The driver will ensure that usable seat belts are available for all passengers and that everyone is properly belted in before the vehicle moves. Jackson County Public Transit will not be held responsible for injuries resulting from passengers unfastening or loosening their seat belts, to the extent that the rider is no longer considered safely strapped in after the driver checked that they are fastened.

 

For Children and Minor Riders

All children over 8 years old must wear a seat belt. Children under 4 years old or weighing less than 40 lbs. must be secured in a car seat. Children ages 4 to 8 and under 4’9” must use a booster seat. Car seats and booster seats are the responsibility of the parent or guardian. Jackson County Public Transit operators are not responsible for securing children accompanied by an adult; this responsibility remains with the parent or guardian.

 

Bad Weather Policy

Service may be delayed or canceled due to unsafe weather or road conditions. Drivers will not travel on hazardous or unmaintained roads. Passengers may be asked to meet at a safe location. Safety is our priority. If service must be canceled, Jackson County Public Transit will make every effort to notify passengers by phone as soon as possible.
